Course Description

With steep retail competition and quick style changeovers, manufacturers, retailers and buying agents are faced with the challenges of offering a wider product range, a quicker product development cycle in a shorter production lead-time. Thus merchandisers, garment technologists and designers are required to develop designs and respective technical packages that are feasible in production as well as achieve accuracy in sample interpretation. The understanding of how garments are constructed, the various seams and stitches utilization in various components within the garment is critical. Thus fundamental knowledge will reduce redundant designs that cannot be replicated in mass production and eliminate misinterpretation in sampling.

Who Should Attend

Associate Merchandisers, Merchandisers, Senior Merchandisers

Objective

The aims of this subject are:
a) To be able to identify, describe and demonstrate/illustrate the various stitches and seams with reference to the ASTM D 6193 standard.
b) To be able to relate functional and decorative stitches to the types of sewing machines.
c) To identify and illustrate the various pattern pieces and constructions (seam and stitch) of the followings: 1.Collar and neckline construction (for e.g., inset, bound seam, facing method etc.) 2.Garment closure construction (for e.g., exposed zipper, concealed zipper, button fly, allen solley, real polo, immi polo etc.) 3.Pocket construction (for e.g., welt, side, patch etc.) 4.Shoulder straps (for e.g., bound, adjustable, insert etc.) 5.Waistband construction (for e.g., one piece, curved, folder set etc.)
d) To analyze and articulate the sewing operations of selected garments including Hoodie Pullover Jacket, Polo Tee, Basic T-shirt, Tiered Top, Camisole & Pullon shorts.
e) An overview of the sequential yet dynamic apparel manufacturing process and its added components/finishing such as embroidery, washing and prints.
