Overview

This course provides a comprehensive overview of the process involved in creating garments, from pattern drafting to cutting and sewing. With foundational knowledge in drafting and sewing, participants will be equipped to advance their skills in pattern making and sewing. Specifically, the course will focus on basic threading techniques for industrial sewing machines and sewing methods for constructing a basic tee and pull-on shorts. By the end of this course, participants will have gained practical skills in garment construction, enabling them to create basic garments using industry-standard techniques. Additionally, they will have a foundational understanding of the processes involved in mass production and the importance of adhering to industry standards for quality and consistency.

Objectives
  • Drafting the pattern pieces, sewing operations bulletin and/or processes required to construct the garment.
  • Draft, cut, and sew a basic tee and pull-on shorts based on a given size specs through a basic pattern block using manipulation methods.
  • Interpret basic garment construction to mass production of pattern development, grading, and marker production based on industry practice.
  • Thread, Operate, and Maintain Industrial and/or Domestic Sewing Machines.
  • Evaluate product outcomes in accordance with the industry norms.
  • Take follow-up actions for non-conformance.

Items Required For Class

Before your class begins, we'd like you to make sure that you have the following items so that the class can proceed smoothly.

The following items are compulsory for students to bring:

IMPORTANT NOTE: Fabric/Lining requirements are based on standard medium sizing. Please purchase additional yardage for larger sizes.
  • Fabric for the T-shirts and Shorts - Cotton Jersey ( 2 to 2.5 metres for 45"/114cm width )  
    • We advise you to get fabrics that are not too soft and slippery.
    • Additionally, solid color fabric is highly recommended. Clearly mark which is the face and back of the fabric.
    • If you prefer to get prints, please get prints that are non-directional and can be cut in either direction. For example, if you get a dinosaur print, you must make sure the dinosaurs are looking in all different directions and not just one.
  • For T-shirts and Shorts - 1 spool of matching color thread (100m to 250m, 100% polyester).
  • Accessories - 1.5-metres of elastic tape (width 40-50 mm).
  • 5 metres of marker/drafting paper ( 45 gsm, 160cm width ).

Students are required to bring their Stationery too. The list of stationery has been stated below.

  1. Pen
  2. Correction tape/fluid
  3. 2B Pencil (and sharpener or extra lead depending on the type of pencil used)
  4. Eraser/Rubber
  5. 1-inch paper masking tape
  6. Glue stick
  7. Notebook
  8. Calculator

All students who take TaF.tc's Sewing Courses are required to bring their own Sewing Toolkit and Drafting Paper for class.

We highly discourage you from missing any classes since the entire program is designed to be hands-on intensive. There is also a minimum attendance requirement of 75% of training hours for Singaporean and PRs, and 90% of training hours for international students. If you do not meet the 75% attendance requirement, you will not be eligible to enjoy subsidies nor to sit for the assessment. Make sure you block off your time during your training with us or find an intake option that will ensure you do not miss any classes. You will only wish that you had more time in the class!
