Overview

Finding a jacket that fits and flatters is an uphill task so learn the art of soft tailoring for notched collar/construct and engineer notched jackets and their variations including the cardigan jacket for women’s wear. Jackets are a common feature in many ready-to-wear fashion brands, and this course is highly recommended for people who are involved in fashion designing, garment production, pattern making, product development, and sewing. You will be introduced to drafting the jacket with given size specifications as well as to the process of making and sewing the jacket using the proper soft tailoring techniques and approaches adopted by the ready-to-wear garment industry. The course is conducted through explanatory drafting, demonstrations, and hands-on sewing operations.

Objectives
  • Develop patterns for notched collar jacket with given industry’s specification or measurement
  • Develop patterns for a variety of jacket styles including a cardigan jacket
  • Prepare fabric, lining and interfacings for layout and cutting of the jacket
  • Apply fusible interfacings and reinforcements for the jacket component before sewing
  • Sew and seam units in progressive assembly
  • Evaluate the jacket against the given specifications or measurements and make adjustment to the desire fit
  • Press the sewn jacket into shape

Items Required For Class

Before your class begins, we'd like you to make sure that you have the following items so that the class can proceed smoothly.

The following items are compulsory for students to bring:

IMPORTANT NOTE: Fabric/Lining requirements are based on standard medium sizing. Please purchase additional yardage for larger sizes.
  • Fabric for the Ladies Jacket - Drill, Gaberdine, Cotton Pique, Crepe ( 2.5 to 3.0 meters for 45"/114cm width )  
  • Fabric for the Toile-Calico ( 2.0 meters for 45"/114cm width).
    • We advise you to get fabrics that are not too soft and slippery.
    • Additionally, solid color fabric is highly recommended. Clearly mark which is the face and back of the fabric.
    • If you prefer to get prints, please get prints that are non-directional and can be cut in either direction. For example, if you get a dinosaur print, you must make sure the dinosaurs are looking in all different directions and not just one.
  • For Ladies Jacket - 2.0 meters Lining (Acetate, Polyester, Cupra)
  • For Ladies Jacket - 1 spool of matching colour thread (100m to 250m, 100% polyester) (required) and 1 spool basting thread (optional)
  • For Toile - 1 spool while colour thread (100m to 250m, 100% polyester).
  • For Ladies Jacket - 1 Button ( Diameter 20mm ) and 6 Buttons ( Diameter 15mm ).
  • For Ladies Jacket - 1.5-metre of non-woven fusible interlining/interfacing ( Freudenberg PE9223, 50g/m2 ).
  • For Toile - 1.0-meter non-woven interlining/interfacing( Freudenberg AP68, 47g/m2 ).
  • Accessories -
    1. 1 pair of ladies' size shoulder pads (5mm - 10mm thick).
    2. 15mm single-sided fusible bias tape.
  • 10 metres of marker/drafting paper ( 45 gsm, 160cm width ).

Students are required to bring their Stationery too. The list of stationery has been stated below.

  3. 2B Pencil (and sharpener or extra lead depending on type of pencil used)
  4. Eraser/Rubber
  5. 1-inch paper masking tape
  6. Glue stick

We do not offer any make-up or replacement classes.

We highly discourage you from missing any classes since the entire program is designed to be hands-on intensive. There is also a minimum attendance requirement of 75% of training hours for Singaporean and PRs, and 90% of training hours for international students. If you do not meet the 75% attendance requirement, you will not be eligible to enjoy subsidies nor to sit for the assessment. Make sure you block off your time during your training with us or find an intake option that will ensure you do not miss any classes. You will only wish that you had more time in the class!
