Overview

This course will introduce the techniques necessary to draft pattern and sew basic tops. You will learn to develop different types of tops using basic block. This includes knowledge of necklines, collars and sleeve variation in pattern making. Gain these new skills through a variety of practical activities, demonstration and explicit teaching.

Objectives
  • Draft pattern blocks in accordance with given specifications or measurements taken from given size specifications.
  • Develop a variety of patterns for tops with variations of collar, neckline, and sleeve using block manipulation methods. 
  • Label and mark individual pattern pieces with symbols and notches based on industrial practices.
  • Sew a top with a variation of sleeves and a fancy neckline according to the given specifications or measurements.
  • Evaluate sewn products against given specifications or measurements.
  • Take follow-up actions for non-conformance.

Items Required For Class

Before your class begins, we'd like you to make sure that you have the following items so that the class can proceed smoothly.

The following items are compulsory for students to bring:

IMPORTANT NOTE: Fabric/Lining requirements are based on standard medium sizing. Please purchase additional yardage for larger sizes.
  • Fabric for Long Sleeve Shirt (with collar & cuffs ) - Cotton Poplin ( 2.5 metres for 45"/114cm width )  
    • We advise you to get fabrics that are not too soft and slippery.
    • Additionally, solid color fabric is highly recommended. Clearly mark which is the face and back of the fabric.
    • If you prefer to get prints, please get prints that are non-directional and can be cut in either direction. For example, if you get a dinosaur print, you must make sure the dinosaurs are looking in all different directions and not just one.
  • 1 spool of matching colour thread (100m to 250m, 100% polyester)
  • For Long Sleeve Shirt - 10 pcs of 4-hole buttons (diameter 10 mm).
  • For Long Sleeve Shirt - 0.5-metre non-woven fusible facing for collar & cuffs interlining/interfacing (Freudenberg AP68, 47g/m2).
  • 8 metres of marker/drafting paper ( 45 gsm, 160cm width ).

Students are required to bring their Stationery too. The list of stationery has been stated below.

  3. 2B Pencil (and sharpener or extra lead depending on type of pencil used)
  4. Eraser/Rubber
  5. 1-inch paper masking tape
  6. Glue stick

All students who take TaF.tc's Sewing Courses are required to bring their own Sewing Toolkit and Drafting Paper for class.

We highly discourage you from missing any classes since the entire program is designed to be hands-on intensive. There is also a minimum attendance requirement of 75% of training hours for Singaporean and PRs, and 90% of training hours for international students. If you do not meet the 75% attendance requirement, you will not be eligible to enjoy subsidies nor to sit for the assessment. Make sure you block off your time during your training with us or find an intake option that will ensure you do not miss any classes. You will only wish that you had more time in the class!

Yes! You can use any SkillsFuture Credits you have to pay for course fees.
