Intermediate Alteration Techniques

This course equips participants with the necessary skills to perform intermediate-level alterations on various garment types. Aimed at individuals in the fashion retail service sector and designers catering to clients needing clothing modifications, it focuses on enhancing proficiency in garment fit evaluation, pinning for alteration, and executing alterations on simulated samples and ready-made clothing. Participants will expand their expertise by working with diverse materials and garment types, ensuring they can meet industry standards. 

The course adopts a hands-on approach, combining theoretical knowledge with practical application. Participants will engage in active learning through simulated samples and real-world garment alterations. Instruction will be supplemented with demonstrations, exercises, and collaborative activities to reinforce learning outcomes.

Assessment will be based on participants' ability to successfully execute alteration techniques, demonstrate proficiency in using sewing machines, and accurately measure altered garments against specified requirements. Feedback and guidance will be provided throughout the course to facilitate continuous improvement.

By the end of this course, participants will possess the knowledge and skills necessary to perform intermediate-level garment alterations effectively. They will be equipped to meet the demands of clients seeking customized clothing solutions and contribute to the enhancement of the fashion retail service sector.

Programme Outcomes

Identify Intermediate Alteration Skills and Appropriate Machinery

Recognise various intermediate garment alteration techniques and determine the suitable machinery to achieve industry-standard finishes.

Perform Extension and Expansion Alterations on Various Garments

Execute extension and expansion alterations on woven and knit garments, including tops, shirts, skirts, trousers, and dresses, adhering to industry norms.

Apply Accurate Markings and Measurements for Alterations

Transfer required alteration markings onto garments accurately and measure altered garments against given specifications, ensuring compliance with industry standards.

Admission Requirements
Singaporean or Singapore PR
  • Aged 16 years and above 

  • Course fee funding eligibility : SCs and PRs (Self-sponsored individuals must be at least 21 years old)

  • GCE ‘N’ Level with 3 credits including English and Mathematics OR WSQ ES WPLN Level 4 and above

  • ALL Students are required to have basic knowledge of computer and Microsoft Office

  • ALL students must be competent or possess equivalent skills and knowledge for the following competencies: Basic Drafting and Sewing

  • ALL students must be competent or possess equivalent skills and knowledge for the following competencies: Basic Alteration Techniques

International Students
  • Aged 16 years and above

  • High School Diploma equivalent to GCE ‘N’ Level with 3 credits including English and Mathematics OR Qualifications from professional institutes may be considered on a case-by-case basis AND Pass TaF.tc Entrance Test AND

  • English Language Requirement – Possess a minimum credit in English at GCE ‘O’ Level or its equivalent OR IELTS score 5.5 or TOEFL score 46 AND

  • Students are required to have basic computing skills i.e. turn on the laptop, use the mouse, drag and drop files, use online search engine for research; and be a competent user of Microsoft Office.

  • ALL students must be competent or possess equivalent skills and knowledge for the following competencies: Basic Drafting and Sewing

  • ALL students must be competent or possess equivalent skills and knowledge for the following competencies: Basic Alteration Techniques

Graduation Requirements
Singaporean or Singapore PR
  • 75% attendance rate of total training hours per module

  • Be found competent during written, practical and oral assessments

  • All Students are also required for this module to produce two garments in accordance to the student's own measurements (Adult Female Figure) OR according to a standard size (M) of an adult female figure provided by the trainer.

International Students
  • 75% attendance rate of total training hours per module. Student Pass Holders – a minimum of 90% attendance per month will be required.

  • Be found competent during written, practical and oral assessments.
